Fundraising dinner event to mark anniversary of fateful Titanic voyage

Posted

A Night to Remember, a special fundraising event featuring a recreation of the last meal served on the R.M.S. Titanic, will take place from 6-10 p.m. Saturday, April 6 at Spring Mill Manor, 171 Jacksonville Road, Ivyland, and will benefit the capital campaign of the Johnsville Centrifuge and Science Museum.

In addition to an elegant menu recalling that served in the first class dining room aboard the ship on its final night, the event will include a live quartet playing period music and an exhibition of Titanic artifacts from the private collection of Titanic expert Craig Sopin, secretary of the Titanic International Society.

Additionally, the program for the evening will include a presentation by explorer, adventurer and businessman Alfred (Fred) Hagen, who will share the story of his two journeys to the Titanic wreck aboard the submersible Titan.

“We’ve received overwhelming reviews when we did this event two years ago, so we’re bringing it back by popular demand,” said museum President Michael Maguire. “We are thrilled that Mr. Sopin has generously offered items from his collection for exhibit and that this will be the only Titanic event in the region where these items will be displayed. It will really make the night memorable.”

Maguire added, “These kinds of Titanic meal events take place every year around the April 14 anniversary of the Titanic tragedy. We are honored to host this one. As with our prior event, we’re expecting people to come from all around the region dressed in their best period clothing.”

Maguire continued, “Not many people know this, but the technology that was used to locate the Titanic in 1985 was funded by the Office of Naval Research and based, in part, on the side scanning SONAR systems that were developed by the U.S. Navy at the Johnsville Naval Air Development Center.

Tickets for the event are available for $160 per person. Order forms at: www.titanicdinner.info.
