Plumstead Legion rallies past Nor-Gwyn

Posted

Plumstead tacked on eight unanswered runs to beat the Nor-Gwyn Hawks 8-3 in Tuesday night Bux-Mont Legion action in Hanusey Park. It was the first time the two teams met this summer.

Plumstead dug themselves a 3-0 hole before they even took a swing. But John Whelan (New Hope-Solebury) and Mason Schultz (Palisades) posted zeros the rest of the way and a four-spot in the bottom of the fifth broke open a 3-all tie.

Left fielder Chase Kimbel (Palisades) doubled and tripled; third baseman Connor Bannon (Central Bucks West) reached base four times while catcher Sam Morrin (New Hope-Solebury) and shortstop Zach Oram (Central Bucks East) both drove in two.

When the pitching and defense are sound, good things happen. Plumstead (5-6), currently fourth in the nine-team league, has allowed only 14 runs in its five wins.

“The biggest positive this summer has been our starting pitching’s ability to throw strikes, attack hitters and work ahead,” said head coach Nathan Michener. “Hitting wise, we’ve been really aggressive at hunting fastballs and trying to take advantage of pitcher’s mistakes.”

Michener, the JV coach at Palisades, was well versed with much of his roster on Opening Day. Plumstead ran out six Palisades Pirates in its Tuesday starting lineup, including second baseman Jack Trickel who tripled.

The two teams won’t wait long for a rematch: Plumstead headed to North Wales Wednesday evening as the Herald went to press.

After a scheduled nine off days, Plumstead returns to action on July 6 against Pennridge and closes the regular season two days later against Chal-Brit.
