The fate of the 119-year-old Washington Crossing Toll Supported Bridge remains uncertain. As Upper Makefield officials advance historic preservation efforts ultimately aimed at preventing an overhaul of the span, the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission (DRJTBC) has hired an engineering firm to conduct a multi-year review process that’s intended to help decide if the bridge should be replaced.

Upper Makefield officials have already hired a consultant to spearhead research efforts aimed at getting the Washington Crossing Toll-Supported Bridge placed on the National Register of Historic places. Now, the township supervisors are looking to expand the scope of Jeff Marshall’s work.

Resistance to a potential project that could see the Washington Crossing Toll-Supported Bridge transformed into a bigger, broader span is growing.
