Champs! Quakertown runs table in state Legion tournament

Posted

Country roads are taking Quakertown to where they belong – West Virginia.

And they will go to the Aug. 2-6 Mid-Atlantic American Legion tournament in Morgantown, W.Va., as Pennsylvania state champions.

The Blue Jays ran the table in the eight-team, double elimination Pennsylvania State Legion tournament held July 24-28 in Latrobe. On a Friday where the heat index at first pitch was 93, Region 2 champion Quakertown outslugged Region 4 champion Paxton (Harrisburg) 14-10 for its fifth straight tournament win.

Quakertown batted around in consecutive innings, plating six in the third and five in the fourth. Ethan Beil socked two two-run homers while Peyton Myers added a dinger. Daniel Qualteria inherited no outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, but stranded two to keep a Quakertown lead of 11-7. Qualteria fired a crucial 1-2-3 seventh to close out the game. Cole Reich reached base five times with three hits and two walks.

Quakertown beat Paxton 8-3 on Wednesday night. That win guaranteed the Blue Jays of Pennsylvania’s two spots in the Mid-Atlantic Regional. The Blue Jays poured on six runs in the sixth, tying it with Brayden Schuler’s RBI single and taking the lead for good with Beil’s RBI single. Beil also homered.

Also, in a Wednesday elimination game, the Region 3 champion Falls Post 834 stayed alive and ousted the host Latrobe Jethawks 5-2. Wyatt Spinks came within one out of a complete game win before being lifted due to pitch count rules.

After a two-hour rain delay on Thursday night, Quakertown and Falls took the field. The Blue Jays knocked out Falls 8-6. Beil homered twice while Reich and Brandon Pierce also left the yard.
