Football: Micucci magnificent as Quakertown stuns North Penn

Posted

“Cool kids never have the time,” Billy Corgan sings in “1979.” The Quakertown Panthers were the cool kids in Lansdale Thursday night. Behind Vince Micucci’s five touchdown passes and an outstanding defense effort, the Panthers beat North Penn 38-17.

It was Quakertown’s first win over North Penn, a school with 2½ times its enrollment, since 1979. And it looked like North Penn’s streak would continue when Jackson Schurmann took the opening kickoff to the house for the Knights.

But the Panthers responded, capping their first drive with a 44-yard Micucci to Max Morris touchdown pass. It was the first of four straight Quakertown drives that ended in touchdown passes. Two Knight turnovers — a fumble and an interception by defensive standout Anthony Ferrugio — gave Quakertown short fields with which to work.

The Panthers built a 25-7 lead early in the second quarter. North Penn got as close as 25-17, but Morris made a spectacular end zone catch on a Micucci toss with 30 seconds left in the third. It put Quakertown up 32-17.

Quakertown next hosts CB West, the defending District One runners-up, on Friday, Sept. 8.
