Girls soccer: Pennridge impresses; West wins

Posted

The Pennridge, Central Bucks East and Central Bucks West girls soccer teams wouldn’t mind running it back in 2023.

All three made the 4A state playoffs. CB East entered states as the District One runner-up. CB West advanced to the second round. Pennridge, the state champion in 2020, made it to the PIAA title game before falling to Central Dauphin.

Their quest to go even further started on Friday when East beat Abington 3-0. Stella Genin’s goal was sandwiched between two tallies from Julia Santanello and the Patriot defense blanked a Ghost team that made districts last fall.

Despite East’s momentum, CB West emerged victorious on Tuesday 2-1 when the two rivals clashed at War Memorial Field. The Bucks successfully opened the Bree Benedict era by overcoming a 1-0 halftime deficit and getting their new coach a win her debut.

Eva Wierzbowski and Avery Markowitz scored for West. Jessie Bernabe had the lone goal for the Patriots, who had to get in gear for another rivalry game – at Central Bucks South – on Thursday.

Pennridge, who returns most of their squad, entered press time a dominating 2-0. In a rematch of the states seeding game in last year’s district playoffs, the Rams coasted over Owen J. Roberts 4-0 on Monday. Liv Grenda had a brace, Riley Williams scored the opening goal and Ava Kiwak added insurance.

One night later, Pennridge routed North Penn 5-1. Five different Rams scored with Hannah Primwhere’s header being the second and game-winner.

Pennridge faces all three Central Bucks teams between Sept. 6 and 11.
