Gold-en Hawks: CR South wins state girls tennis title

Posted

In a sweet trip to the Hershey Racquet Club on Saturday, and in a rematch of the District One 3A title game, the Council Rock South Golden Hawks (21-0) completed their unbeaten season by topping Conestoga 3-1 to win the PIAA team tennis championship.

The Golden Hawks team, the District One champions, consists of Dasha Chichkina, Michelle Lerman and Anya Zubenko at the first, second and third singles respectively. Kim Chen and Emma Traktovenko make up first doubles while Ava Bograd and Elizabeth Krachik comprise second doubles.

In the afternoon title match, Chichkina (7-5, 6-2) and Lerman (6-1, 7-6) both won singles points while Chen and Traktovenko claimed the doubles point (6-3, 6-4).

South beat District Three champion New Oxford 3-1 in the morning semifinal. Lerman (6-2, 7-5), Chen and Traktovenko (6-4, 6-4) and Bograd and Krachik (6-1, 6-2) picked up the needed points.

South didn’t lose a match in its first two PIAA rounds, cruising past District Three’s Hempfield 4-0 in the Oct. 24 opener and beating District Seven’s North Allegheny 3-0 in the Oct. 27 quarterfinal.

Chichkina was the district singles runner-up. Lerman and Zubenko won the district doubles title. The three will return to Hershey this weekend to compete for PIAA titles.

Only Chichkina and Traktovenko are seniors, meaning more deep runs could be in store for CR South.
