Middletown Grange Fair back in Bucks this week

Posted

The Middletown Grange Fair, a Bucks County tradition since 1948, opens Wednesday and runs through the weekend.

The event attracts hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of attendees to Wrightstown to check out the animals, food, activities, entertainment and rides.

A number of 4-H events are on the schedule, including shows featuring rabbit and cavy, poultry, hogs, goats, reptiles, dairy cattle, alpaca and llama and beef cattle.

Also on tap are magic shows, a tractor parade, horse-drawn wagon rides, a dog stunt show and hot dog pig races.

Headlining a range of food offerings is the annual chicken dinner, available on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The fair has grown vastly since 1948, adding the cattle shows, tractor driving, square dancing, machinery parades, high school band performances and television personalities in the 1950s. The ‘60s saw the addition of a horse show and the purchase by the Middletown Grange of a tract of land that became the site for the fairs. The ‘70s brought two permanent buildings to house Grange Fair exhibits, flowers, vegetables, hay and grain, needlework and arts and crafts.

In the 1990s, the three-day fair grew to a five-day affair and a judging arena was added.

The fair opens at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Through Saturday, the event runs 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. On Sunday, it wraps up at 5 p.m. Amusement rides open at 4 p.m. on weekdays and noon on Saturday and Sunday.

Admission is free, though parking is $20 per car per day, or $50 for all five days.
