Gallo, Amor stand out in Week 1

Posted

Two area products turned in eye-opening performances in Week One of the college football season.

Virginia Tech senior tight end Nick Gallo (Council Rock South) caught a career-high seven passes for 49 yards last Friday night as the Hokies fell at Old Dominion 20-17. The seven catches tied for third most in the Atlantic Coast Conference last weekend; Gallo’s longest grab went for 16 yards.

Making his FBS debut on a nationally televised Fox broadcast, graduate student Barney Amor (Central Bucks East) punted eight times for an average of 46.9 yards per boot. Amor’s punting helped Penn State defeat Purdue 35-31 in Indiana. Three punts landed inside the 20-yard line.

Amor, given a sixth year of eligibility because of the pandemic, transferred to Happy Valley from Colgate where he was an All-Patriot League special teams player.

In a truly special moment the week before Amor, a walk-on, was awarded his football scholarship by two-time Super Bowl champion Eli Manning.
