Solebury’s environmental council favors switch to single hauler

Posted

Solebury plans to investigate the pros and cons of switching its residential trash collection services to a single hauler where payments would be made via the municipal tax bill.

Currently, the township is serviced by three customer-picked private trash haulers which bill individual households.

The new proposal was made Aug. 15 to the Board of Supervisors by Scott Blank of the township’s Environmental Advisory Council (EAC).

The EAC has studied the matter for five months, Blank said, and recommends it because it would reduce truck fuel usage and carbon dioxide emissions, especially due to Solebury’s large size (26.6 square miles), low density (327 people per square mile) and its 100 miles of roads. It would not cover homeowners associations, he added.

The plan would be for the EAC and supervisors to draft a request for bids, determine one lowest bidder (for solid and recycling material) and then hold a public meeting for community input. The supervisors would then decide whether to accept the lowest bidder or reject all bids.

The supervisors then unanimously approved a motion to request bids.

Among the benefits cited by Blank were eliminating the number of fuel inefficient trash trucks on the roads, lowering CO2 emissions, reducing road wear and tear, reducing the number of days when trash cans are on the street.

“I have no idea where this is going,” said Supervisor Chairman Mark Baum Baicker. “I have my doubts.”
