Bucks County’s now former DA dons judge’s robes

Posted

For eight years, Matt Weintraub served as Bucks County’s district attorney, overseeing prosecution of a wide range of critical cases. On Jan. 2, he was sworn in as the county’s newest Court of Common Pleas judge.

Weintraub, an Upper Southampton native, was appointed to the DA job in 2016, following the retirement of David Heckler. He won election in 2017 and 2021, becoming the only sitting Republican district attorney in the Philadelphia suburbs.

During his tenure as DA, Weintraub’s office prosecuted a number of major cases, including the murder convictions of Cosmo DiNardo and Sean Kratz for the gruesome killings of four young men in Solebury, a case which drew national attention.

The 2016 rape, murder and dismemberment of Sara Packer’s 14-year-old daughter by her mother and her boyfriend, Jacob Sullivan, was another notorious case.

As a judge, Weintraub, 55, will not hear criminal cases for some time, but will begin his career on the 15-member bench with civil and family cases.

First Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Schorn will step into Weintraub’s shoes to fill out the remainder of his term, which ends in 2025.
