Special meetings set to discuss Central Bucks School Board voting maps

Posted

In two special meetings this month, a committee formed by the Central Bucks School District is discussing a new map under consideration in Bucks County Court to determine the election of school board members.

The first meeting was July 19 at Central Bucks West High School. The second is July 24. A regularly scheduled, full school board meeting is set for July 25.

Members of the committee are school board members Leigh Vlasblom, Sharon Collopy, Tabitha Dell’Angelo and community members, Beth Darcy and Susan Salveson.

The district’s redrawn map, a response to 2020 census data, is being challenged by CBSD Fair Votes, a grassroots citizens group that says the district’s map violates the U.S. Constitution and the Public School Code. The group filed its own proposed map earlier this year.

After all 18 Bucks County’s judges recused themselves, a Montgomery County Judge, Cheryl Austin, was appointed to hear the case. The hearing is set for Sept. 28 at 10 a.m.

The school board’s redrawn map maintains nine significantly realigned voting districts, with one director elected from each. As presented at the start of 2023, the proposed map would move more than 6,000 residents in New Britain Borough and Doylestown Township from a region voting this year to one that would not vote until 2025.

CBSD Fair Votes’ map creates three voting districts, with three school directors elected from each. More than 3,600 residents signed a petition opposing the district’s map.
