Council Rock School Board recognizes Special Olympians

Posted

Council Rock’s Special Olympians joined the Board of School Directors at its Thursday, July 18 meeting to receive a certificate of participation.

“With the Paris Olympics beginning next week, and in the spirit of celebrating athletes of all abilities, tonight we will take time to recognize our very own Council Rock Special Olympians who are joining us tonight with their families,” Superintendent Dr. Andrew J. Sanko said. “These athletes represented Council Rock in the 2024 Bucks County Special Olympics track and field competition.”

Special Olympics provides year-round training for Olympic-type sports for both children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Its mission is to give them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.

The Special Olympics of Bucks County was hosted at Council Rock North in April, and has continually been hosted by Council Rock for over 20 years. One hundred fifty Olympians were present at this year’s competition with Council Rock representing 50% of participants.

“Council Rock is proud of our Special Olympians and ... grateful to the staff and families whose continued support makes this activity possible,” Sanko said.

Council Rock students with disabilities receive continual support through the Summer Academy and ESY programs, both successfully underway, at Hillcrest Elementary, Council Rock North, Holland Middle School, and the STAR Center.

These programs provide extra support in growing their learning skills and help better prepare them for the upcoming school year. The administration is looking forward to the return of students, Sanko said, and is currently working to fill staffing positions, plan curricular goals, and prepare buildings and facilities come September.
