A partnership between two Doylestown Borough entrepreneurs brought the former Zen Den back to life — at least for the summer.
Lula, a collaboration between successful restaurateur Kendall Bajek and owners of the East State Street building, Lynn and Bill Goldman, opened recently.
Billed as a “Summer Series,” Lula is creating a buzz with its tequila and mescal-inspired cocktails and Mexican-style “small bites” created by Bajek, who owns Empanada Mama and Nourish by MAMA in the borough.
Designed with a bright, festive feel and large windows that face the street, Lula is a fun, if perhaps temporary, addition to the center of town.
“We are calling it a ‘summer series,’ meaning we will be collaborating to offer food and beverage from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend,” said Bajek, on social media. “So we will be open for the summer (and probably longer but we’re just soft launching this idea to see what works and doesn’t!)”
The snack-style food menu features everything from churro cheesecake and four flavors of empanadas to different esquites and chips.
“I am keeping the food fun and there will be some regular menu items that remain from week to week for our creatures of habit and then when I’m not traveling, I plan to cook some really cool and exciting specials that I will post on social media,” Bajek shared on Facebook.
Following the closing of the Zen Den in 2020, the 41 E. State St. location has served as a few different businesses, including a “pop-up” for a vintage clothing and accessory shop.
The Goldmans, who opened Roosevelt’s and Blue 52 on Printer’s Alley in the 1990s and later Puck Live, are no strangers to the restaurant and bar scene in the borough. During the summer of 2022, they partnered with local music promoter Joe Montone to open The Garden Bar on the patio of Puck. That has since closed and the venue is now operated by Great Barn Tap House.
