Doylestown Shopping Center Rite Aid to close next week

Posted

Add another Rite Aid pharmacy closing to the growing list.

The Doylestown Shopping Center’s Rite Aid is next in line to close up shop, the chain recently announced. Shoppers can find some good deals on what’s left on the shelves until Jan. 16, when the store is scheduled to close.

While some had thought the North Main Street location, which is undergoing a bit of a Renaissance with a Target arriving later this year, might survive the chopping block, that was not to be.

Rite Aid has been closing hundreds of stores across 17 states, as it restructures the business through a Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which it filed for in October of last year amid a U.S. Department of Justice complaint in March 2023 that accused it of illegally filling opioid prescriptions.

In its complaint, the DOJ said, “We allege that Rite Aid filled hundreds of thousands of prescriptions that did not meet legal requirements,” said Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta. “According to our complaint, Rite Aid’s pharmacists repeatedly filled prescriptions for controlled substances with obvious red flags, and Rite Aid intentionally deleted internal notes about suspicious prescribers. These practices opened the floodgates for millions of opioid pills and other controlled substances to flow illegally out of Rite Aid’s stores.”

The company previously said it will transfer customer prescriptions to other nearby stores and offer employees jobs at other locations, when possible.

The Rite Aid at Cold Spring Creamery Road and Route 413 in Buckingham currently remains open.

The Rite Aid in the Doylestown Shopping Center is set to close Jan. 16. Many shelves are already bare, as shoppers search for bargains.
