Herald summer fundraising drive gets a boost

Posted

When the Bucks County Herald Foundation launched its summer fundraising drive on July 8, an ambitious goal of raising $75,000 by Aug. 9 to support the work of its nonprofit newsroom was set.

The drive, with donations from 399 readers totaling $38,847, just got a big boost.

“We are delighted to announce that a generous Herald supporter, Amy Tait, has provided a special match challenge of $25,000,” said Ann Meredith, the foundation’s executive director. “We are hoping that when readers sitting on the fence learn that their donation will be effectively doubled between now and August 9, they will be moved to help.”

“The Herald is part of what makes Bucks County such a great place to live,” said Tait. “I am happy to support it and hope others will join me in making the Herald Foundation’s summer fundraising drive a success.”

The Bucks County Herald Foundation, the fundraising arm of the Herald newsroom, established a summer fundraising drive last year in response to rising costs and a summer slump in donations and advertising.

“Reader donations allow us to provide free and trustworthy news coverage for people throughout the region,” said Bridget Wingert, president of the Herald Foundation’s board of directors. “We can keep doing it for years to come if our community provides steady support for the work of our newsroom.”

Since its 2020 conversion from a family-owned newspaper to a nonprofit organization, the Herald newsroom has relied on donations from readers, local businesses and foundations.

The newspaper, its website, and daily newsletters remain free to the public.

A major goal of the drive, according to Meredith, is to get 50 additional readers to become “Sustaining Members” of the Bucks County Herald Foundation.

“Sustaining Members who provide monthly donations of $5, $10 or $15 help provide year-round financial stability. For the price of a cup of coffee, our readers can ensure that the Herald remains a trusted source of local news that helps individuals, our communities, and democracy thrive.”

The foundation’s summer fundraising drive runs through Aug. 9.
