As a lawsuit alleging pay discrimination by the Central Bucks School District continues, a federal judge “strongly recommended” the district try to reach a settlement with the two female teachers who brought the suit.
Michael Baylson, U.S. District Judge of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, is currently considering whether the plantiffs have met the requirements to expand the suit to one of “collective action.”
If approved, other female teachers who believe they were discriminated against would have the ability to “opt-in” to the lawsuit, said Philadelphia attorney Edward Mazurek, who is representing Dawn Marinello and Rebecca Cartee-Haring, the women suing CBSD.
It was during a recent hearing on that matter where the judge encouraged the district to attempt a settlement, said Mazurek.
Both sides were given until Aug. 3 to submit their briefs on the collective action issue.
The school district did not respond to a request for comment.
According to the lawsuit, the school district failed to credit female teachers for their education and experience when calculating their pay scale in the same way it did for male teachers.
In doing so, the suit alleges, CBSD violated the federal Equal Pay Act.
