From June 1 through 30, Farley’s Bookshop in New Hope will have Bucks County Community College’s Furniture and Cabinetmaking Program student work on display in the store as part of the first-ever Nakashima Woodworkers Prize competition.
The competition is open only to BCCC students in the program, with the entrants’ work being judged by staff from George Nakashima Woodworkers. The top three student pieces will receive prizes from George Nakashima Woodworkers, Farley’s Bookshop and Lost Art Press, woodworking book publisher.
In addition to the pieces on display at Farley’s, New Hope Arts Center will have work on display in its lobby.
“It was a natural fit for all of us to collaborate on this event and prize,” William Hastings of Farley’s said. “We do quite a bit of work with Nakashima Woodworkers and all of us felt this would be a great way to showcase the incredible young talent in the area. It’s also a great way to get the students some visibility, to let them know that what they are doing matters.”
With the work encompassing conceptual as well as more traditional furniture or cabinetmaking, visitors to the bookshop and New Hope Arts Center will be able to see the range and capabilities of the students.
“There’s a long tradition of excellent, world-class, woodworking in Bucks County,” Christine Ramirez the director at NHAC said. “These students are part of that tradition now, part of continuing the great history that craft and art has here in Bucks.”
