Officials hope courthouse renovation sparks Main Street revival

Posted

The Hunterdon County Board of Commissioners recently hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony in celebration of the renovated Historic County Courthouse in Flemington.

“Part of what makes Hunterdon County a great place to live a raise our families is because we continue to support the preservation of our local history,” said County Commissioner Jeff Kuhl.

Renovations to the courthouse, built in 1828, included exterior restoration and interior rehabilitation of both the courthouse itself and the attached jail and warden’s house.

The project cost more than $4 million but was partially offset by a nearly $1.5 million grant from the Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund.

In 1935, the courthouse was the site of the “Trial of the Century,” as the infamous Lindberg baby kidnapping case was prosecuted.

“I believe that the courthouse renovation will serve as a catalyst as part of a broader revitalization effort of Main Street in Flemington, our county seat,” Kuhl said, in closing.
