Quakertown Legion aims for region repeat

Posted

The Pennsylvania American Legion Region 2 championship began Saturday morning in Emmaus.

The defending champion Quakertown Blue Jays (24-2) earned another trip to the regional finals and awaited either Lower Macungie or Northampton Wednesday night for the crown.

Northampton topped Quakertown 6-4 on Tuesday night in the evening matchup of a split double header. It ended Quakertown’s 16-game win streak.

Quakertown easily handled Bux-Mont runner up Perkiomen 8-0 in Tuesday’s afternoon game. Danny Qualteria hit a two-run double while Carl Weiss dealt on the mound, striking out eight in a four-hit shutout.

The Reading Groundhogs may or may not have seen their shadow in Saturday’s opening round, but they definitely saw many Blue Jay runs as Quakertown romped to a 10-0 five-inning win. Cole Reich drove in four. The Blue Jays topped host Lower Macungie 5-2 on Sunday. Peyton Myers threw a complete game, five hitter and Cooper Natisin had a pair of hits.

The Region 2 champion advances to the eight-team Pennsylvania State Legion Tournament. That double elimination tournament will be held July 27-31 at North Allegheny High in Wexford.

Quakertown won the 2023 state title, becoming the first Bucks County team since Doylestown (2012) and Bristol (2011) to take home that trophy.
