Step Up for Autism Walk celebrates A Step Up Academy’s new home

Posted

A Step Up Academy (ASUA), a private, licensed, special education school dedicated to serving students with autism and co-occurring disabilities, will hold its inaugural Step Up for Autism Walk on Aug. 24 at its new home, located at 125 Royal Ave., in Wyncote, on the campus of Arcadia University.

ASUA will occupy the first two floors of the former Bishop McDevitt High School. The event is both a fundraiser, with a goal of raising $50,000, and a chance to celebrate ASUA’s new home. Registration begins at 8 a.m., the walk will take place at 9 a.m., with the ribbon cutting immediately following at approximately 9:45 a.m. and the awards ceremony at 10:15 a.m. Tours begin at 11 a.m. Refreshments will be available after the walk.

The 1-mile walk will take participants through the grounds of the facility and introduce families and the community to the school’s new home, which unites ASUA’s lower and upper schools under one roof. The lower and upper schools are currently located separately in Jenkintown and Abington, respectively. The move is scheduled to take place late summer after ASUA receives approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Education for the new location. The new space allows ASUA to serve more students, elevate its innovative programming, and make space for new initiatives.

ASUA serves children with autism from preschool through 12th grade or age 21. In addition to academic support, ASUA provides occupational, speech, and physical therapy services, as well as many other related services including adaptive music lessons.
