“Treacherous.” Snow makes a mess of Tuesday morning commute in Bucks

Posted

A Tuesday winter storm disrupted morning commutes for many motorists in Bucks County, striking just as commuters were leaving for work.

“Road conditions are treacherous,” Warwick Township Police reported at 8:54 a.m. on X, formerly Twitter. “Please give crews time to plow and treat the roads before venturing out. Many motorists are already stranded or worse.”

By 9:30 a.m., police in Buckingham Township were reporting trouble on Route 202 in both Buckingham and Solebury townships with “numerous vehicles disabled blocking the road due to heavy snow.”

The dense, wet snow downed wires — like on Short Road at Fleecydale Road in Solebury — and felled trees — including one that blocked Creamery Road between Route 263 and Meetinghouse Road, also in Solebury — further impacting road conditions.

The storm closed most local schools as well as county and many municipal offices Tuesday.

Starting Monday afternoon, a steady stream of towns announced snow emergencies. By 10 a.m. Tuesday, the partial list included Doylestown and Chalfont boroughs and the townships of Newtown, Warwick, Warminster, Upper Southampton and Richland.

SEPTA reported numerous delays on its regional rail system, Amtrak canceled morning trains running from Harrisburg to Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Turnpike reduced the speed limit to 45 mph.

On Monday afternoon, the National Weather Service was predicting totals in the 6-to-8-inch range in Upper Bucks County and lower accumulations in Central and Lower Bucks.

But by late Monday evening the totals had been adjusted upward to call for 6 to 8 inches of snow for most of Bucks and all of Hunterdon County.
