Upper Makefield Public Works superintendent Bruce Scott is retiring

Posted

Bruce Scott is calling time on his tenure in Upper Makefield.

After serving the township for more than 21 years, Scott has decided to retire from his position as superintendent of the public works department.

Scott’s final day will be Aug. 31.

It’s a well-earned retirement for Scott, who worked himself up within Upper Makefield’s Public Works wing from laborer to foreman to, ultimately, superintendent – the department’s top role, officials said.

“The township thanks Bruce for his service and acknowledges his many positive contributions over the years,” said Township Manager Dave Nyman.

With Scott departing, Upper Makefield now needs to hire a new superintendent to lead the department. To that end, the board of supervisors has given township staff the green light to begin advertising the vacant position. Nyman said internal and external candidates will be considered.

“We hope to have a new superintendent in place by the end of October,” Nyman said.

The Upper Makefield Township Public Works Department is responsible for the maintenance of 56 miles of township roadways and township properties.

This includes maintaining not only municipal buildings and parks but also making sure township roads are clear and safe for year-round travel. In addition, the department is responsible for maintaining street signage, including maintaining visibility, such as removing foliage that’s obscuring signs.

The superintendent spearheads all those activities and more.
