Woolverton Inn now a Historic Hotel of America

Posted

The Woolverton Inn in Stockton, N.J., has been inducted into Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

It joins more than 300 hotels and resorts throughout the country to be so recognized for preserving and maintaining its historic integrity, architecture and ambiance. But it’s only the second in New Jersey and the first in either Hunterdon County or Bucks County.

To be selected for membership in Historic Hotels of America, a hotel must be at least 50 years old, designated by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark or listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

“We are delighted to join Historic Hotels of America,” said Mary Passalacqua, owner and general manager of the Woolverton Inn, in a statement. “Many of our visitors are interested in the history of our property and the surrounding area. This is a wonderful opportunity to enhance our guests’ experience with resources and support available through this great organization that shares our values for preservation of our country’s precious historical assets and related stories.”

The original landowner, John Prall Jr., served in the Revolutionary War and built the original two-story farmhouse that still exists today. The Woolverton Family purchased the site in the mid-1800s and transformed it into a three-story grand Colonial manor house.

It remained a private residence until the 1980s when its transition to a bed-and-breakfast took place.
