Yardley Council, residents brainstorm ideas for borough's future

Posted

Yardley Borough Council members joined with residents to brainstorm ideas on various topics at the end of the April 5 council meeting.

Council Vice President Caroline Thompson, who chaired the meeting in President David Bria's absence, said the "unconventional" agenda item was part of the process for helping the borough formulate five and 10-year financial plans.

After introducing the idea and having residents who wanted to participate fill out surveys, Thompson helped organize borough officials and residents into three smaller discussion groups who talked about public safety, recreation, capital projects and planning, finances, staffing and other subjects.

In other actions from the meeting, Thompson announced that an appeals board is being formed that would hear appeals from residents, contractors and others of requirements of the Uniform Construction Code.

The borough is seeking trained, experienced professionals in construction, real estate and related areas to serve on the board, Thompson said. The appeals board would give people an avenue for possible relief if they objected to a part or parts of the UCC being required for their projects, Borough Manager Paula Johnson added.

Terms on the appeals board would likely be somewhere around three to five years, she said. Anyone interested in serving on the board should email Johnson at pjohnson@yardleyboro.com.

The council also renewed outdoor dining permits for 2022 for Rosa Bianca, Continental Tavern, The Vault, Yardley Inn and the Canal Street Grill. Also approved was the purchase for $350 of a Logger, a device that measures water volume and flow in streams, for a project being done by the borough's Environmental Advisory Council.

The cost will be reimbursed from a grant, Thompson said.
