Northampton supervisors to consider Super Wawa plan

Posted

More than 2,750 people have signed an online petition opposing a proposed Super Wawa in Holland, Northampton Township.
The township supervisors are scheduled to consider the preliminary/final subdivision and land development plan for the Super Wawa on 5.4 acres at 287 Holland Road, at a special board meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the township building.
The plan calls for a 5,585- square-foot store, six two-sided pumps for a total of 12 fueling stations under a canopy and 56 parking spaces.
It would replace an older Wawa located less than 500 feet away, according to an email from residents opposed to the plan. The older Wawa does not have a gas station.
Residents say they have numerous concerns about the proposed development, including health and environmental impacts, crime, increased traffic, and light and noise pollution among others.
“Many of us are petrified of the future we will face if this Super Wawa is built here in Holland,” they said via email.

Julie L. Von Spreckelsen, an attorney for the developer, Provco Pinegood Northampton, said she was unable to comment because the matter is in litigation.
The proposed development is located in the C2 general commercial office zone with village overlay.
Mike Solomon, Northampton’s planning and zoning officer, said neighbors filed an appeal to the township Zoning Hearing Board decision to allow the Super Wawa as a permitted use in that zone based on his determination that the proposed development is a retail store with accessory fuel sales, as opposed to a gas station.
The decision has been appealed to the Bucks County Court of Common Pleas.
According to Solomon, not everyone in Northampton is opposed to the project. “There’s been opinions on both sides,” he said. “We’ve heard from people on all ends of the spectrum.”
