Red light cameras will improve safety

Posted

The safety of our pedestrians and the motoring public continues to be one of our most significant concerns in Montgomery Township. Since Jan. 1, 2023, the Montgomery Township Police Department has investigated over 1,500 traffic crashes, resulting in over one hundred fifty injuries and six fatalities. During this same period, officers initiated 3,362 traffic stops for speeding violations and 1,179 traffic stops for red-light violations, including No-Turn-On-Red violations. Additionally, officers have conducted 2,821 enforcement details aimed to combat these violations.

Public awareness campaigns to reduce these violations have been initiated, including using our social media platforms and four fixed electronic speed display signs within the township. Portable pole-mounted speed display signs have also been deployed in over 70 locations throughout the township to combat these issues.

The proposed intersections have been selected because of the high number of collisions at those locations. Traditional red-light enforcement efforts at those locations have proven ineffective due to road design issues and environmental factors prohibiting other effective enforcement initiatives. In accordance with the Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Code, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has reviewed the proposed intersections and recommends they are appropriate locations for automated red light enforcement systems.
