Steven J. Coppens

Steven J. Coppens (known to many as Spike) of New Hope, PA, passed peacefully in his home on Friday, July 12, 2024 with his husband of 42 years, Jose Boscan at his side. Steven turned 73 years old on July 6.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, Steven lived for a short time in Boston before coming to New Hope. Steven was a gifted and resourceful cook and host. When he first came to New Hope, he put these skills to use as a chef at Mother’s Restaurant where he also served as a bookkeeper. A savvy businessman, Steven and his cherished husband, Jose, successfully invested in and managed local real estate in New Hope. An ardent advocate for New Hope and the community, Steven was a borough activist and was vocal in his support of New Hope. He was a regular at New Hope Borough meetings. Generous with his time and talent, Steven served as a valued resource for other business owners, encouraging them in their successes and advising them on how to effectively address any concerns or issues. The success of the greater New Hope area business community was of the utmost importance to Steven.

Steven loved travel and good food. He and Jose enjoyed hosting family and friends in their home. He had a dry sense of humor. You always knew where you stood with Steven and, if you were his friend, you were his friend for life. Steven was an animal lover. He and Jose raised and adopted many cats over the years; Nick, Ralph and Christina Elena being favorites.

Steven was predeceased by his parents Alfred Coppens and Regina Constance Jaskowiak Coppens, his sister Christine Coons and his mother and father-in-law Jose Angel Boscan and Rebeca Lucia Flores de Boscan.

He is survived by his husband Jose Alfredo Boscan of New Hope and his niece Dawn Coons of Kauai, Hawaii; his cousins Debbie Horner, Mark Jaskowiak and Michael Jaskowiak; his sisters-in-law Maria Christina Boscan and Maria Elena Boscan; his brother-in-law Jose Miguel Boscan; Jose’s nieces and nephews Solis, Karloren, Pedro, Ana Carla, Jose Angel, Karina, Rebeca Cristina, Eugenio, Cindy, Mark, Jose Miguel Jr., Jonathan, Jan, Juan, Luisa Elena, Paco, Rebeca Beatríz and Thom; and many beloved friends who will always remember him fondly.

A Mass will be offered on Saturday, July 27, 2024 at 10:00 at St. John the Evangelist Church, 44 Bridge Street, Lambertville, NJ 08530.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorial donations be made to either St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 (stjude.org), Doylestown Hospice, or to the animal shelter of your choice.
