HISTORY LIVES: Doylestown Shopping Center

“CROWDS JAM NEW SHOPPING CENTER” screamed the banner headline on the front page of The Daily Intelligencer, Oct. 15, 1959.

Mercedes Padrino Anderson arrived in the United States in 1962, a refugee from Fidel Castro’s Cuba.

The Swallows of the Evening

The swallows of the evening have no worries

In the pursuit of truth, words are important. Good law is practical and objective. Bad law pits good people against one another. When the great American melting pot is stirred, consensus is formed.

Sought-out guidance and prayerful decision by our pastor should be a feeling of assurance, not anger. It was an oppressive challenge to Father Gurkin, in his obligation to lead the congregation.

I realize you try to present a balanced view, but how about adopting this idea? Given that, as we all know, the country is presently divided roughly 50/50 in terms of political views and support, why don’t you adopt a policy of publishing one letter representing each side whenever one or the other comes in?

A guest opinion writer lost me when he claimed, in last week’s Herald, that inflation was 9% when President Biden was inaugurated (“Biden controls neither inflation nor oil prices” July 4).

I was at a rally over the 4th of July weekend in Doylestown and heard Ashley Ehasz, candidate for PA Congressional District 1 representative, speak about women’s right to choose, reproductive health, abortion healthcare access…freedoms no longer guaranteed.

Did you know that the only time schools are legally required to inform the public about a weapon incident involving a student is when it results in expulsion?

Vote Democrat. This is bigger than Biden

Frankly, when judging someone who is essentially applying for the job of President of the United States, is a debate an accurate measure?

In November we will go to the polls to vote — not just for President, but also for U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Here in Bucks County, voters will also be choosing 10 representatives to the Pennsylvania Legislature.

Having recently celebrated my 100th birthday, I have taken the time to reflect on many things. Although we recognize July 4, 1776 as the date our Independence was declared, it wasn’t until June 21, 1788 that New Hampshire became the ninth and last necessary state to ratify the Constitution of the United States, thereby making the document the law of the land.

HISTORY LIVES: The Scumblers

During the early summers of the 20th century, a group of Philadelphia artists took the trolley north to the Village of Edison and practiced their art in an old barn referred to as “the Shack.” This group of men called themselves “The Scumblers.”

Most senior citizens know about the Grandma telephone scam when a caller poses as a grandson. Telling a troubled tale, he tries to extract emergency money from his target.

Naming Fireflies

They appear and disappear like a meteor shower – if meteors could be resurrected to new life after burning out.

It’s always a pleasure and a privilege to talk about the fine journalists who write the stories, take the photographs and design the pages you see week in and week out in the Bucks County Herald newspaper.

Donald Trump, leader of the MAGA Party (the Republican Party was hijacked long ago), was given another pass at the debate.

The presidential debate on Thursday night frightens me. I will vote for the Democratic nominee.

There was a suggestion made during the recent New Hope Borough Council meeting, according to Blake Barrigh’s report in the June 13 Herald, that “the Odette’s building essentially blocks pedestrians from reaching the canal at that location.” This is false.

You may recall President Biden saying on television, soon after what he called the “outrageous” Dobbs decision, which held there is no right to an abortion contained in the U.S. Constitution, that we as a nation need to “codify Roe v. Wade as soon as possible.”
