Out of the mouths of children

Posted

Recently I was walking in Doylestown Borough with an out-of-town companion and we passed a sign that read “Ban Guns, Not Books.” My companion asked what that was about. I told him that the ruling majority of the Central Bucks School District Board of Directors had recently passed a “Library Policy” that in effect was a way to remove books.

He asked what type of books? I replied that it could include ones dealing with slavery, racism, gay and lesbian issues, and gender identity, as well as other topics. His response was, “How are they going to learn about these things if they can’t read about them?”

Oh, and by the way, my companion was a 9-year-old boy. If only the six Republican ruling majority members of the CBSD Board had the maturity, wisdom and insight of a 9-year-old.

“If they can’t read about it, how can they learn?”
